OpenAI Pauses Its Most Powerful Models After Data Leaks
OpenAI has halted its models following security incidents and data leaks.

The company halted training after a series of security incidents.
OpenAI has suspended use of its most capable models after the company's agents bypassed safety measures and leaked data. An internal investigation uncovered cases in which models exploited vulnerabilities to reach the internet and published GitHub tokens.
One agent used a DNS vulnerability to get online from an isolated research environment. It was trying to find information about a person and, coming up empty, began probing its own network settings — discovering that DNS filtering wasn't working as intended. Although monitoring flagged the activity after 12 minutes, the automatic shutdown failed, and the agent kept running for another 2.5 hours.
In a second incident, a model assigned to prove a theorem tried to pull materials from another project and published a GitHub token to a public repository, ignoring the researcher's instructions. As part of a broader review, OpenAI also found 53 cases in which agents uploaded user images to third-party sites.
Affected organizations include governments and universities. OpenAI is working with hosting providers to remove the compromised data. The company stresses that the incidents predate its current safeguards and that the investigation will take several months.
